Since the invention of light in 1879 by Thomas Edison, technology of the light bulb has been evolving to keep up with the demand of improving energy efficiency and saving electricity. One of the most important missions in society today is to find new ways to save money.

In the 1950’s, buildings were filled with Incandescent lights. Energy was much cheaper so the property owners could afford to have lights that were more costly to use. Incandescent lights had short lives, lasting only about 1,000 hours, produced too much heat, and used considerably more electricity than lightbulbs today.

Between the 1960’s and 1970’s, Fluorescent lighting became the newest technology available that was able to save consumers money. Air conditioners were more widely available during this time period so companies were continuously using more and more energy. With the introduction of fluorescents, companies cut their energy consumption by 75%. Not only did this new technology save money, they also lasted 10 times longer than the Incandescent lights. The drawbacks to the Fluorescent lights are their lack of ability to dim, and they contain mercury which can be dangerous to have in warehouses or workspaces.

The 1980’s brought the HID (metal halide) bulbs. They were significantly more energy efficient but still produced a lot of heat. The Metal Hallides were able to be used both indoors and outdoors but they continued to waste a considerable amount of energy.

Most recently, the newest and most helpful technology created is the introduction of LED lights. They
work differently than any other type of bulb has in the past. These bulbs boast a 50-90% energy savings over Incandescent lights. This means that a 10 watt LED can produce the same amount of light as a 100 watt Incandescent light. On top of this, these lights can last up to 50,000 hours which means, depending on the amount of use per day, they have the potential to last up to 46 years! LEDs have the ability to brighten to their fullest potential regardless of the temperature, which makes them ideal for outdoor lighting.

Seeing how much progress lighting technology has made in the last century, the progress still to come is unimaginable. At Efficient Lighting Consultants, we stay up to date and aware of the newest
technologies in lighting so we can save you the most amount of money and we do our part to save the planet at the same time.
